In 1979, an intrepid restaurateur named David Song opened up Japanese restaurant on Highway 101. The first sushi restaurant in all of North County in San Diego, the popularity of the new sushi restaurant was paramount. David Song’s son and current owner, Charlie Song started working at Samurai in 1982. After a fire in 1986, the Highway 101 location closed and reopened almost a year later at the current location in the Lomas Santa Fe Shopping Center. The head chef, Makoto Ishihara started in 1984, and has enjoyed 20 years of cooking and guiding Samurai.
David Song passed away in 1992, leaving the family restaurant firmly in control of his son Charlie. Samurai now has a long history in North County, with five chefs who have each worked within it’s doors for more than 20 years. With a total of 12 chefs ready to prepare excellent Japanese food, come to the Lomas Santa Fe Shopping Center, and try us out.
We are both honored and proud on our focus on traditional Japanese Cuisine. We are one of an elite group of restaurants to have four forms of dining:tables: a Sushi Bar, a Teppan Yaki room, and a special Tatami room.
In the Teppan Yaki room, one can find a chef grilling right before the guests on a flat topped grill. The Tatami room is a very special experience also. Several days advanced reservation are required, and only fixed menus and pricing for a full course traditional meal are available. Uses include a special anniversary or business meeting. Catering and take-out are available and can be arranged by phone.
Because of the large volume of fish used in our 50 seat sushi bar (the largest of its kind in California), fish is of the highest quality and freshness. Also essential to our high quality is the excellent relationship we maintain with our 4 distributors to receive the freshest and best cuts of fish. Let one of our expert chefs please your taste buds with sashimi or sushi.
